Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium):
Therapeutic actions:
Anthelmintic, antiparasitic, bitter tonic. (Bone, 2003, p. 469) Phytochemical constituents that enhance these:
- Bitter
sesquiterpene lactones (especially absinthin), flavonoids,
hydroxycoumarins, resin, silica, tannins, terpenoids, volatile oil:
thujone, isovaleric acid. (Mills, 1994. p. 220) (Bone, 2003, p. 469)
Supporting evidence: Intravenous
administration of wormwood decoction demonstrated a choleretic effect.
In an experimental model increased gastric activity and stomach acidity
was shown to have occurred after oral administration of absinthin. A
clinical study found "a dramatic increase in duodenal levels of
pancreatic enzymes and bile" after oral administration of liquid
wormwood. (Bone, 2003, p. 470) |
